What's your IQ?
by Tamim Ansary
Although the term "IQ" is no longer much in vogue with IQ experts, you still hear it often enough on the street. Ask 20 people what it means, and most of them will likely say "intelligence." Press for a longer definition and you might hear, "It's your intelligence score."
That concept--intelligence score--is one that's worth deconstructing.
What's in a phrase? In our quest for the meaning of IQ, let's leave aside the multiple-intelligences argument for now. That's the recent theory that says there are eight to ten--and maybe more--types of intelligence. And it makes the term "smart" even more ambiguous.
If the concept of "smart" is hard to nail down, "smarter" at least makes intuitive sense. No matter how you define intelligence, some people surely have more of it than others.
And if "smarter" makes sense, then it must be possible, at least theoretically, to measure "exactly how much smarter."
But when you start talking about "exactly how much smarter," you rely, I think, on a certain underlying image of intelligence and intelligence testing.
Is the brain like a bottle? In this image, the brain is a container, and intelligence is a substance in it. An intelligence test, therefore, is like a dipstick. Shove it into the brain, pull it out, and what registers on the measuring stick is the amount of "smarts" in that brain.
But this image isn't accurate, is it? Interesting as poetry, maybe, but not really descriptive of what's happening.
After all, intelligence clearly isn't in the brain, it is the brain. It's less like the oil in the engine and more like the efficiency of the engine as a whole. Every aspect of the engine affects its efficiency, from how finely milled the surfaces are to the grade of oil in the block to the design of the engine.
So how can such a many-sided totality be measured?

Does she want to date you?
By Alan Goldsher
Guys can be kinda dumb. I’m not talking kinda dumb in a low-IQ kind of way—remember Ken “Mr. Jeopardy” Jennings? Last time we checked, he was a guy—and clearly not unintelligent. But in terms of figuring out how to comprehend a woman’s feelings about us when we’re trying to make the leap from “friends” to “friends who kiss,” forget about it.
This is especially true for guys who’ve been burned in the past (and who hasn’t been?) who are wary about rejection. Maybe we’re not totally illiterate, but we often have a difficult time reading signals. So here, a few signs she’s interested—consider them your green light to get closer.
The “let’s laugh” signal
Distinctly not-dumb guy David Wygant, author of Always Talk To Strangers, is an excellent signal-reader. “If she makes you feel like a stand-up comedian, even though you’re not that funny, she wants to take it to the next level,” says Wygant. Similarly, Rosemarie of White Plains, New York, shares, “If I’m interested in a guy, I kind of tease him—I try to get a funny, bantering chat going. It shows that I’m interested in playing a bit of a cat-and-mouse game, you know? I’ll say something like, ‘I think you’re just making that up,’ or ‘Honestly now, has that line worked?’ but I say it with a big smile and eye contact so he knows I’m just joking.”
The tell-tale time sign
If you are friends with a woman and sometimes wonder if there might be more there, take heed of when she wants to hang out with you. If she wants to meet you for a quick workday lunch, chances are she doesn’t fancy you in the way you might hope. But if she asks you to meet her for a drink in the evening or to see a movie with her on a Saturday at 8 P.M., she may be casting you in more of a boyfriend role. Says Shelly of San Diego: “I work with a lot of guys and admit to getting crushes on coworkers from time to time. I’ll chat them up about new movies I want to see, and if one I’m interested in asks me out, I do what I can to make it at night on a weekend. That makes it so easy to grab a drink or food afterward and get to know each other on a more personal level.”
The body language clues
OK, so the odds of a woman reaching out to hold your hand while you’re flirting with her are slim to none. So how does she use her body to show you she’s interested? Jess from New York believes a woman’s gestures will send you the message. “Her body language will give her away—if a woman leans in toward a guy while he’s talking, mimics his body language, and maybe sneaks in a subtle touch here or there, these are pretty good signs that she’s into him. Obviously, he should get her phone number and actually call.” And how does a guy know if a woman isn’t interested? “If she is looking around the room while he’s talking to her and crossing her arms across her chest,” says Jess, “she’s probably not that interested. Also, if she tells the guy that he would be perfect for her sister or she suddenly brings up the fact that she’s been talking to her ex-boyfriend, there’s probably not a spark there.” The guy should just move on to a woman who is worth his time or possibly take the uninterested woman up on her sister offer.
The look of “I like you”
A guy should also know what kind of eye contact is waving him in. Direct eye contact that lasts more than a couple of seconds is a sign of interest, say the experts. And if a woman looks from your eyes to your mouth, well, things are in very, very good shape. “I don’t know if it’s conscious or not, but when I like a guy, I find my gaze wanders from his eyes to his mouth,” says Moira of St. Louis. “It’s definitely a seduction move; it lets him know that I’m thinking about what it would be like to kiss him.” Gentleman, if you’re getting that signal, this is another time you want to go ahead and get that phone number.
Taking the next step
Once we men realize she “likes us, likes us,” our minds are oftentimes so blown that we have no idea how to proceed. Fortunately, Wygant does: “Once she gives you the hints, you need to close the deal. Ask her to talk to you away from her friends or call her up on the phone and say, ‘You know what? I want to take you out for a nice dinner—just the two of us.’” What if the object of your affection is a woman you’ve known as a pal for a while? Over dinner, you have the talk, advises Wygant. “You say, ‘I’d really like to become more than friends. I’d like to start dating you. What do you think of that?’ At this point, she’s given you every single sign that this is the conversation she’s been dreaming about, and of course the answer is going to be yes.” So it all really boils down to a two-pronged plan: Pay attention and take a chance. If you focus your energy on the woman in question rather than on yourself or your surroundings (which is what you should be doing anyway), you’ll pick up more than you ever thought you could have. And if you disregard the very obvious signs — the laughing, the touching, the eye contact — and you don’t go for it, well then, then you are kinda dumb.
Alan Goldsher’s book, Modest Mouse: A Pretty Good Read, will be published by Thomas Dunne Books in August 2006. Visit his website at http://www.AlanGoldsher.com or write him at askalan@cs.com.
Marialena's note: Since love along with spring is in the air, I hope these few hints will be helpful for the guys who will ask for a date this coming weekend. Go for it, boys, may Lady Luck be on your side...!

Five reasons why you are still single
Why are you still single?
By Jerusha Stewart
You know you’re a catch... so why are you flying solo? These silent love saboteurs may be to blame—here’s how to get past them.
So you really and truly want to be in a relationship but find yourself singing solo in the shower? Do you know you’re a great catch but can’t figure out why you’re not paired up like most of your pals?
Unwittingly, you could be engaging in a little self-sabotage when it comes to finding your special someone. With a little digging you can uncover the silent saboteurs preventing you from achieving “I’m taken” status—and learn how to overcome them.
Silent saboteur #1: You’re ignoring your relationship needs
Often people with a lot on their plate will say that they’re open to a relationship and are willing to make room for one. But in reality they’re not. Some tell-tale signs: Every time your co-workers or friends extend an invitation to join them for a little after-work socializing, some unfinished project on your desk convinces you to say, “Not tonight, but once my workload lightens up” (as in, never). Or, you find yourself saying things like “I’ll start really looking for someone once I get my promotion/graduate degree/finances in order” (which, alas, may not be any time soon). Solution: Put yourself first. Have an honest chat with yourself: Do you really want a romantic relationship in your life right now? If the answer is yes, make at least one step toward carving out some space for it, whether that’s signing up for online dating, telling all your friends and family you’re open to a set-up, or establishing a once-a-week night out with your single friends. And don’t let a few bad dates drive you back to your workaholic ways—once you have a good one and see what you’ve been missing, you’ll understand what all the hubbub is about.
Silent saboteur #2: You’re too quick to decide whether you’re interested
In today’s fast-paced culture, it seems natural to decide whether someone’s right for you in, oh, about three seconds. Alanna Rayford of San Francisco often cuts flattering male attention short. “In the first five seconds I know whether or not I’m going to continue to have a conversation,” she confesses. But think about it: Most of us aren’t great at making a killer first impression. “It sure could explain why I haven’t had a date in a year,” Alanna continues. “I don’t give men a chance to show me who they are. A little patience would probably help.” Solution: Avoid making snap judgments. If you find yourself making snap judgments like Alanna, adopt these two new rules to end your dating drought. Rule one: Promise yourself to withhold any dateability decisions about someone until after a cup of coffee (the whole thing, not the first two sips). You should be able to talk to anyone for as long it takes to drink a latte. Rule two: Adopt a second-date rule. If you like the person, even just a little bit, make plans to see them again. At that point, you two should both be more relaxed and ready to reveal your true selves.
Silent saboteur #3: You’ve got options but none are “good enough”
We’re not saying you shouldn’t have standards. But see what your friends (especially the single ones) think of your prospects. If none of them get why you didn’t follow up with that person you thought was, oh, an inch too short (or too tall), or a freak because he wore a bolo tie, then you could be guilty of having too many must-have traits on your list. Solution: Re-evaluate what’s really important. We all have our best-case scenario in terms of height, weight, hair color, and so forth in a partner. But how many relationships do you know where two people in a couple fit that wish list to a tee? None or not many, most likely—which is all the more reason why should you probably take a closer look at the qualities you deem ideal, or deal-breakers, on a date. A solid relationship is more often based on shared values and common interests—so make sure you keep those things in mind on your next date rather than obsessing about his too-short trousers.
Silent saboteur #4: You’re not entirely over your ex
You and your ex are history... so what’s up with the long, warm-and-fuzzy phone conversations to “check in” with each other? Sure it seems harmless. But if you find yourself comparing every new potential love interest to this former flame (or if you conveniently “forget” to tell your ex about the people you’re dating), then it could mean you’re still harboring some feelings for the one who got away, which makes it difficult to really focus on someone new. Solution: Give yourself permission to meet someone new. You could be holding on to your past because you haven’t been building your post-breakup support network—a mix of friends and family members you can comfortably dial for no reason at all. Weaning yourself off your ex can be hard, but it largely comes down to re-directing those impulse calls. The next time you’re tempted to call your ex to vent about something awful that happened at work or just something funny that happened you’re dying to share, resist the urge and call someone else, like your mom. Over time, you’ll stop thinking about your ex so much, leaving you more open to meeting your next one-and-only.
Silent saboteur #5: Your attitude leaves a bad taste in the hearts and minds of others
When you’re out on a date, do you find the conversation generally veering toward your dimwit boss, dysfunctional relatives, dating horror stories, or some other “poor me” tale? You may think these stories are funny (and they very well may be), but after a while, anyone listening is going to wonder: “Why would I want to join this pity party?” and steer clear. Solution: Get an attitude adjustment. Hey, we’ve all got problems. And while the blues are fine in stereo, very few people want a personal serenade. Putting your best foot forward all wrapped up in positive packaging makes you a much more attractive companion. Just because someone’s agreed to spend time with you doesn’t mean they’ve agreed to spend it as your therapist, so accept the dating process for what it is: A chance to get to know someone better, not vent. Stick to more positive stories and see if you don’t find yourself in a more positive place, dating-wise.
Jerusha Stewart, a.k.a. The Last Single Girl in the World, reveals how to be singularly sensational in her book The Single Girl’s Manifesta.

4 Signs For Successful Flirting
Suddenly Single Body language: 4 signs to decode it
By David Givens, Ph.D.
Your date's gestures can send you silent signals of desire—or communicate a complete lact of interest. Do you know how to read the message in these moves?
Can you tell when someone is interested in you? Are you sure? Since no one likes to be rejected, it's a good idea to understand the subtle signs of attraction (or lack thereof) before you launch yourself into the line of fire. As an anthropologist who studies mating and dating rituals, I'll help you decode the top four body-language cues. Use this information to either proceed with your flirtation—or flee with ego intact.
Before we get into the specifics, know this: For all of our technological advances and psychological insights, when it comes to the silent signs of sexual attraction, we are no different than beasts. For the past 500 million years, every member of the animal kingdom has utilized certain signals to communicate their interest in mating. These boil down to the message: "I am harmless; I won't bite." (Charles Darwin called these signs "submissive displays," because they make the subject seem more approachable.) Seeing any one of them may signify physical attraction. Seeing all four at once is compelling evidence that you are liked—and very possibly lusted after.
Signal 1: Lifted Shoulders
One of the most easily detected signs of attraction is lifted shoulders. This motion indicates that a person has activated what biologists call the "cute response," a bashful, almost childlike behavior that reveals a softer, more compliant side. This is an emotional, involuntary muscular response to someone you like, and it has a universally disarming effect. (It is also a natural response when you're oohing and ahhing over a puppy or cuddling with a baby.) In a dating scenario, this unconscious movement tells you that the person you're interested in wants to get a little closer—and that you shouldn't be shy.
Sign 2: Pigeon Toes
Pigeon toes may not sound like the sexiest of gestures, but an inward rotation of the feet suggests definite interest. Anatomically referred to as "tibial torsion," this toes-turned-in posture occurs when someone feels both smitten and somewhat intimidated by you. By "shrinking" the body, the subject is creating a less threatening profile. Put simply, pigeon toes do for the body what the smile does for the face. Both actions say: "If you approach, I won't snub you." Worth noting: In direct contrast to pigeon toes is the more aggressive military posture. This toes-out, hands-behind-the-back posture is reminiscent of soldiers at ease, and its aloofness should tell you that it's probably best to keep your distance.
Sign 3: The Palm Reveal
As you talk to your potential love interest, watch his or her hands. Specifically, take note of whether the palms are facing upward, while gesturing or resting on a table. The brain is programmed to perceive vulnerability and openness in this motion. In courtship, these gestures are psychologically friendlier than palm-down cues. (Indeed, think about the downward hand motions that President Bush uses when talking to the country about Iraq or that a grade-school teacher uses when trying to calm rowdy students. Not a maneuver that communicates warmth and connection.)
Sign 4: The Forehead Bow
Your date has more than friendship in mind if he or she uses the forehead bow. Here's the tell-tale gesture: The person tips the head slightly forward and looks up at you from under the eyebrows. (Think of Lauren Bacall looking at Humphrey Bogart with her famous come-hither look.) A fragment of the full-body bow, which is used in cultures around the world to show respect and deference, this head motion and those bedroom eyes can indicate that you may not be very far away from an actual bedroom. In direct contrast to this move is a posture of domination: A subtle tilting back of the head and casting of a downward gaze. That look should tell you where you stand—and that, in fact, you should go stand elsewhere because this individual is not a good prospect for love.
David Givens, author of Love Signals: A Practical Field Guide to the Body Language of Courtship, is an anthropologist who specializes in nonverbal communication. When he's not people watching, he studies the courtship rituals of reptiles, mammals and birds.
